We are just over two weeks in to the New Year… which in years past would mean that I have just about given up my New Years Resolution to lose weight. Yes, I have to admit, I am “that girl”. But I am not alone – studies have shown that a very small percentage of us actually keep our New Years Resolutions past January. See, you feel better about yourself already don’t you? 😉
This year I did something different though – and decided not to set New Years Resolutions to “diet,” but instead to focus on making small changes that will make me and my family feel better over all.
I think the reason I always struggled before was that I tried to change too many things at one time. So instead this year I decided to make small changes – and I am happy to report I am going strong towards making 2016 my healthiest year yet!
One of the biggest changes we have made is overhauling how we eat breakfast. You know what they say – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, breakfast has always been my hardest meal of the day. I was usually so busy trying to get the hubs and the kids out the door I did not even think about putting food in my own mouth. In fact, it was normally lunchtime before I thought about eating… which was horrible not only for my brain but my metabolism too.
Many mornings, I would rarely do more than start a pot of coffee.
The kids often opted for whatever was quick and easy as we all rushed out the door… which I am a little embarrassed to admit sometimes started off frozen and didn’t have much nutritional value even after it was heated. Waking up just a few minutes earlier and making sure we actually take time for breakfast together has been really nice – not only for our physical well-being, but I think our mental well-being as well.
My new favorite go-to breakfast is Odwalla Smoothies paired with whole grain oats that I get from my local Safeway. They are super delicious and filled with vitamins and minerals that make me feel great – whether I am heading to volunteer at the kids school, heading to the gym, or just working in the office. Even my husband asked me to pick up some for him after tasting mine.
I have also started serving the kids their choice of fairlife Milk or Simply Orange juice along with breakfast every morning. Orange juice is a small change that can make a huge difference – like boosting your immune system, detoxifying your body, and even reducing inflammation. Fairlife Milk not only tastes better, but is better for our environment as well.
I feel like this little change is helping my family feel better, while doing a little bit more of our part to take care of our planet. Talk about a win-win.
We are not the only ones focused on living healthier this New Year. The new Start Smart. Stay Active. Keep Fit. Program is encouraging families everywhere to focus on making 2016 your best year yet.
