I’m happy to announce that I’m a Tween Mom Ambassador for U by Kotex!
Even though my daughter is only 7, we’ve recently started talking a lot more openly about our bodies and what will happen when she hits puberty. And that may be sooner rather than later based on her development so far. She’s always been the tallest kid in her class (and usually the class above her too), in the 99 percentile in height. She was the first kid in pre-school to lose a tooth and even now at the age of 7, she’s lost more teeth than everyone in her class. Her pediatrician told me not to be surprised if she hits puberty earlier than many of her friends.
.
My daughter has also asked a lot of questions during my pregnancies with her little sister and baby brother. While I haven’t given details about how babies are made, I have tried to be honest with her when talking about what happens to our bodies during puberty and pregnancy. I want her to be comfortable with her body and aware of what’s going to happen before it actually happens.

I know that my mother probably had “the talk” with me when I was young, but I remember having no idea what was going on when I actually did get my period. She immediately reassured me and explained everything to me, but I don’t want my girls to have any moments of confusion or fear when they get theirs. I want to be more open that I remember my mother being with me.
Get the Facts
Your daughter’s period will come, whether you (and she) are ready or not. Kotex has made it easier on parents to prepare for “the talk” with their daughters with lots of great tips and articles on the Kotex website. Find out what you can expect, brush up on the facts about puberty and be aware of common misconceptions about periods among many tween girls.
Prepare for the Talk
Set a date and get prepared to talk with your daughter. Kotex has a calendar online that you can use to plan your talk, and helpful tips about ways to start the conversation and common questions that girls have.
A Place for Girls
Kotex has also created an area online just for tween girls called “Hello Period”. They can find the answers to questions they have about their bodies and their periods and read stories posted by other girls their age. There is a section clearing up myths vs. fact and even an area to ask an anonymous question. While I hope that my daughter will feel comfortable enough to come to me with her questions, I’m glad there’s a place like “Hello Period” where she can get her questions answered and read stories about girls who are going through the exact same thing she is.
There is also a video with teen star Aimee Teegarden from Friday Night Lights talking about her experience getting her first period after having “the talk” with her mom and the experience of a friend at a sleepover who wasn’t sure what to do.
If you have a tween daughter, be sure to check out the Kotex website pages for both parents and tweens.
I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
