The week before last, I drove out to Wilmington, N.C., for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. I’d planned to walk with a friend and then planned to walk with my husband and kids, but because of last minute schedule changes, I ended up walking alone. I’m glad I did.
In the past, when I’ve walked in events like this, I’ve walked with friends. It’s fun and empowering and feels good to do something as important as raising money for and fighting cancer.
When I walked this time, it was so much more powerful on a personal level. I spoke with survivors of Breast Cancer. I walked with and cried with family members of women who didn’t survive their fight with breast cancer. And I talked with others just like me who have been touched by a loved one’s fight and just want to be there to do whatever we can.
I spent my day getting to know these women and it was so, so powerful.
Everyone was able to write messages of inspiration and love on the pink Fire Truck. There were some funny and some sad, but all beautiful.
There were lots of tents with activities and information to help us learn how we can help.
I loved all of the items for sale with great messages on them! I bought the pink “Big or small, save them all” shirt, the white “Fight like a girl” hat, a keychain and some pins. I love knowing that I’ll be sharing such an important message every time I wear them.
I was trying not to get too many up-close photos for privacy reasons, but there were a lot of people there. The entire parking lot continued to fill as the day went on. There was music playing and everyone was having a great time.
Some of the artwork was just beautiful. My favorite was this painting of a tree and butterflies with the words “Grace”, “Wisdom”, “Truth”, “Courage”, “Faith” and “Hope”.
Even the trash cans were pink. Love it!
Did you know this?
I want to thank all of the women who shared their stories and their day with me. It was a powerful day and made me even more resolved to continue to do whatever I can to help the fight against breast cancer.
Please consider joining this important fight and start Making Strides Against Breast Cancer!
