When we built our new house, the builder added cool new state-of-the-art smoke detectors. The detectors all work together so that if one detects enough smoke, they’ll all sound alarms to let everyone throughout the house know of the emergency. They smoke detectors run on the household electricity, but all have batteries inside for back-up power.
But last weekend, those smoke detectors weren’t so cool.
They were pretty uncool, in fact.
Because for an entire afternoon, they were beeping to let us know that the batteries were running low. Even though we changed them less than a year ago. And even though my little boy needed to take a nap. And even though the beeping made me insane.
I can’t reach the smoke detector in our trey ceiling, so I had to wait for my husband to change the batteries. When he got home from running errands, he grabbed the ladder and batteries from the pantry and went through the house changing them out.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
It didn’t stop. (I’m not sure if I can adequately express how really, really, really annoying it was, but try to imagine how hours of beeping might make you feel.)
We went through the house trying to figure out if we’d missed a smoke detector somehow. We had not.
We wondered if the new batteries he’d installed were old, but they were still in new, opened packaging that didn’t expire for over a year.
Finally, just before my husband headed out to buy a third set of batteries, I remembered our new Duracell Quantum batteries.
I’d been sent Duracell Quantum batteries to try out and had every intention of using them in the kids’ electronic toys. It seems like we’re always changing batteries in the toys, so I knew that long-lasting batteries would be perfect in them.
But. Even better.
Duracell Quantum batteries in our smoke detectors.
My husband climbed back up the ladder, changed the batteries out again, and the beeping finally and mercifully stopped.
Not only did the beeping stop, but we won’t be hearing that beeping again for a very, very, very long time thanks to Duracell Quantum.

I’ve had that happen a lot where the brand new batteries were dead! !0 years in storage is a HUGE deal!
Oh I’ve had that happen before, that annoying incessant beep drives me crazy. Most of our smoke detectors use 9V batteries though and it looks like these only come in AA or AAA.
Is that not the most annoying noise in the world? It seems like our batteries always die in the middle of the night when we are all trying to sleep….
I remember experiencing that with a couple smoke detectors at my previous house, but thankfully the ceiling wasn’t too high for me to change them. However, it seems like the batteries wouldn’t last that long. And I agree with you…. that is one of the most annoying sounds!
Woo hoo! I just bought and installed these batteries over a photo light of my late daughter. I was looking for something that would last longer than the others had.
So glad to see your post and how you like them. And glad to hear the beeping is gone. I work in a school cafeteria, and the worst noise is any repetitive one the kids make in line. Makes me bonkers.
thank you for sharing this! like you, i cant reach the smoke alarm to change the battery when it starts that inncesant, infernal beeping! (yes, it gets on my nerves – lol!) so its great to learn about some batteries that will last a very long time and i love that they are good for 10 years in storage as i tend to misplace things and this way when i find some long lost batteries, they wont be expired!
I need to stalk up on these before Christmas gets here!
I need to stock up on these!
These are great batteries.
this is quite a coincidence because our smoke detector starting chirping tonight and i just took the battery out to stop the noise because i didn’t have another one to replace it with. i will definitely be looking for these new Duracell batteries the next time i’m in a store. thanks for the information.
We just moved and had a similar issue with constant beeping, I’m going to try the Duracell Quantum in our smoke detectors since you had sucess 🙂
It drives me nuts when they go off… especially if I don’t have replacements on hand.
Your smoke detectors just wanted Duracell power! 🙂 Really though, I am sure the beeping drove your crazy. Glad to see you were able to get them to stop.
I hate when that happens. It’s great to know they batteries will ensure that doesn’t happen.
Oh the beeping would drive me crazy! I’m going to get some these new batteries soon.
i remember this happening earlier in the year. the beeping started in the middle of the night
That beep always starts in the middle of the night at our house!
i didn’t know these existed. thanks for sharing!
10 years of storage is amazing! It makes me want to stockpile them now. We sure could use Duracell Quantums inside our remotes.
I love the Duracell Quantum batteries!
There is nothing more annoying than that beep! Thank goodness for it though, right?
I HATE when the beeping starts. i want to pull my hair out. I used the batteries in my son’s Leappad and they lasted for about 8 hours of play time.
I’ve totally had that happen before where an alarm is beeping and we can’t figure out which one it is. Drives you batty. I bet these batteries are awesome and last a long time!
Oh, the BEEPING. We have one particular smoke detector at the top of our staircase that seems to need batteries more often than the others. And of course it’s in a place we can’t reach with a ladder and it’s right outside our bedroom doors and it always seems to start beeping in the middle of the night. Of course. 🙂 I need to try these batteries out!
That’s so good to know about the storage life because I can only imagine how long they may sit in a warehouse or store before being purchased.
I’ve been suing really expensive long lasting lithium batteries to avoid he same problem. I will definitely check these out as this is the first I have heard about them! Thanks for the review!
I would power my daughter’s toys.
Very good batteries and I would use these inside my smoke detector! I can not stand the beep when the smoke detector has no problem. I need better batteries like these!
It never fails that when I need batteries which seems more often the case with my battery operated mouse that they don’t work for very long. I have not had a chance to try these batteries but I know that duracell is a great brand and their other batteries last longer than most. Thank you for letting us know about these. I will be looking for them next time I am at the store. =)
Looks like you aren’t the only one who hates the merciless beeping of smoke detectors… LOL (and I hate that noise, too)! It’s funny that I’m reading this today, because a few months back, we took the batteries out of our smoke detectors for that very reason! Finally got around to replacing them now that the weather is getting colder and we need the wood stove. I’m going to remember Duracell batteries, for next time, though, since you had good success with them.
That is so nice to see this brand team up with first responders. After all, they need their equipment to work in desperate situations! I would probably put these in our smoke alarms just because you don’t ever want to be in a situation where they don’t work.
I’ve never heard of these batteries before. I’m thrilled I read this post. I go crazy when the beeping starts. I’m amazed the batteries last 10 years in storage. I’m definitely going to replace mine with these Durocell batteries. Thanks for sharing. I’m passing this on also to my older children.

I have had that happen before i hate it when the batteries are going dead and they make that beeping noise it drives you crazy i will have to get soem of these batteries
I love that they have 10 years batteries. I have never heard of them before. I bug me when one is beeping and we cant figure out which one it is. My batteries usually all go dead within the same week
That’s insane that they’re guaranteed for 10 years in storage!
Ha ha I know that annoying beep beep beep noise. My mouse seems to run out of batteries way to fast!
