Did you know that May is National Pet Month? National Pet Month is all about celebrating the benefits that pets bring to people’s lives – and vice versa. Studies have shown that owning pets can help to decrease depression, stress and anxiety as well as lower your blood pressure, improve your immunity and even decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. Plus, what is better than coming home to a loving furbaby who is always simply happy that you are home?!
I have always been a dog person, but five years ago I got a frantic call from a friend who had found three tiny kittens whose mama had been hit by a car. I took in these three tiny babies – each just over one pound – who needed round the clock care for bottle feeding, bathing, shots, medicines and more. My intention was finding great homes for them once they were old enough – but after 7 weeks of taking care of them, there was no way we could let them go.
Now each one of these kitties – who are now each nearly twenty pounds apiece – fill our days with laughs and love and purrs and head bops.
Since I work from home I spend all day every day with them, and have to say, they have turned me from a dog person into a dog and cat person – I cannot imagine my day without them.
We recently got the chance to make a difference in our own community. The girls and I have volunteered at the SPCA before, but got the chance to enjoy more serious hands-on cuddling after my sister-in-law found two litters of kittens within one week. She and my nieces foster stray and abandoned animals but didn’t have enough room for so many kittens at once. My daughters and I were happy to donate our home and our time!
Although nighttime feedings were difficult, the girls loved helping care for the kittens around the clock.
We kept four kittens over a month, until they were old enough to be adopted. A local vet’s office donated the shots needed to keep the kitties safe and healthy, then we took the kittens to our local animal rescue foundation once they’d arranged the adoptions.
It was one of the sweetest and most rewarding things we’ve done in a very long time.
