The kids have been back in school for a few weeks now. It seems like we have a period of adjustment every time they’ve tracked out of school for a while. Since Christmas and summer breaks are longer, it can take everyone a couple of weeks to get back on track. We’re finally back in our daily routine of waking up early and getting ready for school. Between getting the kids dressed, hair done, shoes on, papers signed, and lunches packed – all before 6:45am – the mornings can be a bit of a whirlwind.
I have to admit, though, I have been doing this mom routine for quite a while now, and we have it down to a science. Here are some of my favorite tips for making mornings easier during the school week.
Tips for Making Mornings Easier
1. Have a plan.
Kids and adults can thrive with a to-do or chore list – so make a plan for the morning to make sure everything gets done. This includes brushing teeth, taking vitamins, packing lunches, etc. Take this one step further and have a list of everything that needs to be taken to school as well. No more having to run back to the house to forget that water bottle!
2. Prepare the night before.
Getting prepared for school the night before can help really speed things up in the morning. Have your children choose what outfits they want to wear – all the way down to the socks and shoes. You want to make it very simple to get dressed and ready without a meltdown or wasting time trying to find a matching pair of socks. Also – look through your children’s backpacks, sign any necessary papers and make sure all homework is finished.
3. Eat something easy, filling, and nutritious.
Breakfast is absolutely the most important meal of the day, so make sure you start your day off right with a great breakfast packed with good protein. Studies have shown that a great protein packed breakfast will help kids feel better and retain more at school. Have easy and healthy food choices that children can help prepare to save time in the morning.
Whether our kids are pouring a glass of milk to drink or pouring milk over cereal, milk is a part of every single breakfast in our house.
A breakfast that includes wholesome milk is a great way to start the morning, especially with the new Horizon Organic Grassfed Milk. The kids love the creamy, refreshing taste and I feel good about serving them organic, grass-fed milk.
We’ve been buying ours at our local Walmart and really love it!

My favorite tip is to prepare the night before to make mornings a little less stressful. It is nice to have your clothes laid out, lunch pre-packed, and everything together to grab and go.

I think the best tip is to plan ahead the night before. That way you have everything laid out and don’t have to spend time making decisions or finding things in the morning.

Night-before prep worked really well when mine were small, and they even do it now (for work!)
