It’s hard to believe that there are 16 million children going hungry in our country right now. The equivalent of the populations of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Phildelphia – all not having enough food to eat. It’s not only in large cities, and it’s not only children without homes.
The reality is that 1 in 5 children in our country does not know where their next meal is coming from. Children in rural areas, in the suburbs, the cities and possibly in your own neighborhood.
To shine a light on this issue, Unilever Project Sunlight is rallying people all across the country to “Share A Meal to Help Turn the Tables on Hunger in America”.
Unilever Project Sunlight is focusing on creating a better and brighter future for the children of America. The initiative is doing this by encouraging citizens to take steps towards living sustainably, towards using less and sharing more.
This short video gives just a glimpse of what millions of American children are going through on a daily basis:
The simple act of sharing a meal can actually impact the fight against child hunger. If you’ve ever wondered how you could make a difference, here are some great ways to get involved in your community:
Share a Meal Potluck – Host neighboring families for dinner and invite a family in need to join
Local Food Drives – Organize a food drive or use the Feeding America online Food Bank Locator tool to find and volunteer at a food drive in your area
Get the Community Involved – Partner with a local community organization and host a community potluck in your area
Host a Virtual Food Drive – Plan a virtual food drive by setting goals and working towards them using the Feeding America Personal Fundraiser tool, then promoting participation in community
.
What can you do to help in your community?
