The small town that I live in is super popular.
So super popular that people keep on moving here. Just keep on and on moving here, faster than the schools, shopping areas and medical professionals can keep up.
Most of the Pediatricians’ offices are totally full, in fact, and not taking new patients. Because of that, we still go to our Pediatricians’ office allllllllll the way on the other side of the city where we used to live.
They’re great, but it can take almost an hour to get there with traffic. Since there’s always a wait before we can see the doctor, a short check-up can sometimes take almost 3 hours from the time I leave home until the time I return.
So when the kids aren’t feeling well, or someone is hurt, I find myself weighing the problem with how much of a pain it would be to drive across the city. Of course, if someone is definitely injured or clearly sick, I’ll take them wherever I need to to get help for them.
But when it’s possibly just a cold, or maybe just sniffles from seasonal allergies, I don’t want to spend 3 hours to hear what (I think) I already know.
And now I don’t have to. Thanks to American Wellness.
American Wellness (Amwell) is America’s largest telehealth company, connecting patients with board-certified, licensed doctors, psychologists and dieticians for immediate and live, online visits. The doctors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are ready to help keep us healthy – all from the comfort of home.
My younger daughter had a cough for several days last week and then began complaining of a headache.
I wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything serious, so I decided to use American Well to talk to a doctor about what might be going on.
In just a few minutes, I had created an account and was deciding on a provider to talk to. I could see the different doctors’ qualifications and specialties, as well as their ratings from previous American Wellness patients. I looked through the information and found a doctor who seemed perfect for us, and who was immediately ready for an online consultation.
After I answered a couple of questions and entered my payment, I was ready for the appointment.
The doctor gave me a chance to tell her all of my daughter’s symptoms, then asked questions for more specific information. After we talked for a little while, she reassured me that my daughter seemed to be having sinus and seasonal problems, To help ease the symptoms until they passed, I was advised to give over-the-counter pain medicine, if needed, for the headache, and to encourage my daughter to drink more water when her throat felt dry and scratchy. She told us that my daughter may have the sniffles too, and if so, we could use a children’s OTC allergy medicine to help ease the sinus pressure and symptoms.
It was SO easy! I even got a complete report on the appointment afterward and a printable receipt for insurance or for my records.
I’m already imagining how many different types of appointments I can use American Well for now, instead of driving across the city. The online doctor visits are only $49 per visit – definitely better than my (higher) co-pay and the time it takes to drive across town, huh?
It will definitely make life a lot easier for this very busy mom!

I have never heard of this but I will check it out.
I’m going to read more on this and check it out.
This is the next best thing to the old house calls from long ago. It’s a great idea. Thanks for sharing!
Oh that would be so wonderful! So many times its after hours and you have to go to urgent care or ER and sit for hours and hours. This would be perfect for those nights!!!!
Nice to know something like this is available, especially with a small child in the family.
sounds very convenient
I think this is a good concept but it would depend on the situation. It would be wonderful for those belly virus’ or something normalish.
This is a really awesome and convenient app. I’d like to try it out myself.
This is a great idea, especially if you have kids.
I am going to check this out. I really find it hard to make it to the doctor alot when I need to.
This is a great concept that is long over due. Just imagine telling the doctors all about your symptoms with no interruptions or rush.
I receive all of my medical care through the VA.
THis sounds like a great service.
This could be very helpful.
This is great! This is an option that’s new with my company’s healthcare plan this year and I’m looking forward to trying it out.
This is an interesting concept… I can see how it would be very convenient.
It’s an interesting concept, though I’m not sure how often if any I would ever actually use it. We either medicate with over the counter or it’s bad enough to go to the ER.
this is great. Definitely a nice option for busy parents.
I love this idea, and I’d like to try it. I find that it is unlikely I’ll spend my deductible that my coverage will actually start paying, so this would be perfect!
Thanks I will check it out.
Very informative, great options!
I will have to try this out sometime.
This is such a great idea especially for parents and kids.
I like this. Will have to use the code when I get a chance.
This is actually would be a great option for us. We are very rural and there really is no such thing as same day appointments here for the minor stuff.
