Top Pregnancy Trends of 2016
Discover what’s “in” this year for pregnant mommies!
1. Fit Moms
In 2016, pregnancy is not slowing down moms to be. Exercising and maintaining a balanced diet during pregnancy has proven benefits to both mom and baby’s health. Fit moms are all over social media, explaining their modified workout routines and pregnancy diet plans that are helping them stay in great shape while being pregnant.
2. Midwives
2016 seems like the year of ‘throwback’ labors. Many parents are choosing to have a much more personalized and private birth by using a midwife to deliver their baby. Whether that be at a birthing center, at-home, or the hospital, midwives involvement with births are on the rise. In fact, in the past 5 years the National Center for Health Statistics stated that midwives assisted in 6 percent more hospital births in the United States.
3. Placenta, No Longer Medical Waste
Throwing out the placenta is a thing of the past, in 2016 more moms are finding health uses for their placenta. Placentophagy, the consuming of the placenta for various health reasons such as lowering the risk of postpartum depression and insomnia, is a recent trend. The placenta itself can be dried and made into a pill form, fried with onions, or eaten raw in the delivery room. However, that is not the only placenta trend on the rise, placenta tissue banking is an alternative route many moms are now choosing to take. The placenta tissue contains an abundance of stem cells that are 100% genetic match to the mom. Many new moms are privately banking it as a ‘just in case’ health insurance policy.
4. Delayed Cord Clamping
Delayed Cord Clamping is a recent pregnancy trend that has proven to have neurodevelopmental benefits, decreased risk of anemia, increased blood volume, and increased levels of stem cells in infants. It is the act of not cutting the umbilical cord right away after a baby is born and letting additional cord blood flow into the baby. The World Health Organization suggest to delay cord clamp for 2-3 minutes; after that, there is no added benefit to the baby.
5. Cord Blood Banking
2016 parents are all about the future of their families, especially when it comes to their medical needs. In recent years, cord blood banking has become a more common practice because of the increasing amount of disorders and diseases that can now be treated with cord blood. It is the private storing of the left over cord blood from the umbilical cord. This blood is rich in young stem cells. Today, these stem cells can be used in treatments for over 80 diseases and disorders. Many parents are choosing to bank their baby’s cord blood to ensure that they have a trust fund of young stem cells in case medical need arrives in the future.
