There are so many things that a lot of us take for granted in this country – clean air, clean water, and the ability for our children to get a good foundation of education in our public school system. A good education is a fundamental building block for a successful future, but there are too many children around the world who are unable to get a proper education. For some children, this can be because they have to work to earn money for their family’s survival, but for others, an education isn’t even available.
In most developing countries, women and girls are not given the same opportunities we have here in America, which is why I joined up with CARE.org to share their great mission. While we focus on “back to school” here in the states, I can not help but want to do what I can to make sure girls in other countries have the opportunity for a successful future.
CARE is a global humanitarian organization that fights poverty by empowering girls and women. Through programs that help to fight hunger, aid in emergencies, and help girls fight the barriers that get in the way of getting a good education, CARE.org is making a difference in the lives of thousands of women and girls around the world. It is their mission to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice around the world.
I spoke to my children about the CARE.org mission, and showed them stories of young girls who are having to fight just to get their education. Stories of girls like Bridget, who wants to go to school to become a doctor because the nearest hospital is a six mile walk – entirely too far for most sick patients to walk – so they do not get the care that they need.
Or the story of Anzida who loves school because she knows it will give her a bright future, and that she can share what she learns with her community members – many of whom were unable to get an education themselves.
My girls were so impressed with these girls desire to go to school – something so many children here groan about. They felt so inspired that we have chosen to send letter of support to these girls, to encourage them to continue to strive for their goals and believe in their dreams – and I want to challenge all of my readers to do the same. You can sign a letter of encouragement and write your own message of support to students in developing countries.
Check out CARE.org’s Simply Said Program, and learn how you can make a difference with just a simple letter of hope and encouragement. I know how wonderful it feels to receive a hand written note in my mailbox, I can only imagine how a young girl would feel knowing someone was supporting her from all the way around the world.
