Home Improvements for a Dream Home
My husband and I built our current home after we got married and started having children. We designed the house to fit our growing family and have been pleased with the choices we made. When we first moved in, everything was perfect and new.
Now, years later, that beautiful new house is beginning to show its age.
We’re starting to see appliances fail, systems needing repairs more frequently, and unfortunately, some parts of the house need complete overhauls.
Until a few months ago, I didn’t think that our roof would be one of those parts. But we’ve had two hurricanes come through this year and those storms took a toll on our house.
As it turns out, a few missing shingles torn off in a tropical storm weren’t just a few shingles that needed to be replaced. Instead, those shingles were an indication of how worn and old our roof actually is. Now that we know the roof isn’t in good shape, we’re learning more about what we’ll need to do to about it.
Repairing a Roof
We weren’t sure if the roof needed to be repaired or if the entire thing would be replaced. Without knowing much about our roof, we did a little research to learn more. Here are some great articles on roof maintenance and inspection.

Replacing a Roof
As we began to learn more about our roof, we realized that even if we could repair it, we might prefer to replace it instead. We are now learning that our roof wasn’t originally built with the highest quality supplies. Besides looking worn and faded, the roof isn’t actually protecting our house like we thought it was. We have now learned that we’re at risk of leaks and mold growth, higher energy bills, and greater vulnerability to pests. We’re even potentially at risk of serious water damage and a decrease in property value.

Yes, taking care of a roof or replacement takes serious consideration. Not something to cut corners. When buying a home, a good inspection should be very careful about the roof, if it was an inferior job, any potential problems.
