How Scary is This?

Our back yard extends down to a huge forest and protected land area. There are coyotes living back there that we can hear howling some nights. They’ve even been seen in the neighborhood from time to time, which freaks everyone out.

The coyotes don’t scare me nearly as much as these. We’ve seen a LOT of these hornets this summer, and despite spraying the nests and hornets directly, we haven’t been able to get rid of them.

That is a QUARTER!

When I moved the flyswatter to try to take a picture, it came back to life and moved its leg over onto the quarter! I jumped about 6 feet in the air.

Well……maybe I bounced the flyswatter a bit, but who can say for sure?

 

Anyway, have any of you ever seen these? How can we get rid of them?!?

  1. Yikes..Bees and wasps are the insects you’ll see me running from..we used to get these MASSIVE black wasps in our house..not cool! They were like, 1.5 inches long! In our new house I haven’t seen any though..we just get huge bumble bees instead, which aren’t as bad..just gotta watch the kids since last year my daughter tried to pick one up and got stung.

  2. Nuclear weapons? Around here it’s yellow jackets. It think they just have to run their course. For what it’s worth, when we find a yellow jacket’s nest we wait unitl nighttime, then pour gasoline in the nest and burn it. Also, if you have any fruit trees, make sure to keep the fallen fruit cleaned up. Good luck!

    • Good thinking about the fruit trees. There are some down near the forest that probably need to be cleaned up.

      I’m impressed that you burn yours! We’re not the handiest of people, so starting a fire would be a bad idea for us. lol 🙂

  3. Looks like it might be a type of Cicada Killer…check out the first pic on this page

    If that’s what it is then the good news is that the males can’t sting and the females aren’t very aggressive and rarely sting…

    The bad news is that they could very well scare you to death lol 🙂

    I think I would pass out lol…I am TERRIFIED of all bugs, spiders, etc.

    • It would great if they’re just Cicada Killers, or any kind of non-agressive bug! You’re right. I’ll still be scared to death! 🙂

  5. I use to work at a summer camp and hornets built this huge nest on the other side of our bedrooms back window. It was kind of creepy and also neat. They did not build an outer wall on the side of the window since the window itself was a hard surface. So you could watch everything they were doing inside the nest as long as you wanted and get as close as you wanted without being harmed.
