Our back deck is one of the favorite features of our house. When we built the house, we planned for a nice screened porch that opened to a large back deck overlooking the yard and woods.
We enjoy sitting under the ceiling fan of the screened porch on hot summer days and love eating and relaxing on the deck throughout the year.
But something has been happening every summer that has changed our enjoyment of our deck.
Once it gets warm outside, we start noticing a lot more bugs. This was on the inside of the screened porch the other day:
The worst problem, though, is all of the wasps and hornets. They make nests around the outside of the porch, up in the eaves of the roof, and are always flying around.
We can’t go out onto the deck because there are dozens of wasps flying around. The kids can’t play in their sand and water table, we can’t enjoy picnics on the deck, and I can’t sit outside and watch the kids on the playset because we’re worried about being stung.
After avoiding the deck for weeks, we finally decided to do something about the wasps and hornets.
How to Get Rid of Wasps and Hornets
Wear Protection – Wear thick clothes, including long sleeves, long pants, gloves and a hat to cover as much exposed skin as possible.
Spray at Night or Early Morning – Wasps and hornets are usually less active and less aggressive at night and can usually be found in or nearby the nest. Note the locations of the nests during daylight hours and take care to not shine a flashlight on the nest or insects when spraying. It may disturb them and cause the insects to become immediately aggressive.
Escape Route – Do not spray nests or insects from a ladder or a location with limited escape access. You’ll want to be able to spray the insects and/or nest and then retreat to safety.
Stream Spray – Wasps and Hornets must be sprayed with a heavy, direct stream of pest control product. Hot Shot® Wasp & Hornet Killer can spray up to 27 feet, coating and covering wasps and hornets and their nests, and eliminating the need to get too close.
Work in Stages – Some wasps and hornets will fly through the stream and survive, so it will be necessary to work in stages.
We’ve sprayed 3 different nests and all of the wasps and hornets we’ve seen so far this summer with Hot Shot® Wasp & Hornet Killer and are finally able to enjoy the outdoors again. It’s so nice to be able to sit out on the deck and let the kids play without worry of anyone being stung!

Sounds like my life…I’m getting this stuff.
We are working through stages now. We have some mud wasps that apparently want to make home on our porches despite us wanting them gone!
Why are earth do we even have wasps! What is there purpose on earth than to be complete jerks! Good job taking your deck back!
My son says the same thing!
We have wasps all the time too. We’ve sprayed other stuff and they came back. I’ll have to look for Hot Shot next time I’m at the store.
The photo of the bug on the screen is AMAZING!
My husband is the bug killer, but I always have a can of HotShot on hand so that I can kill bugs if he isn’t around.
My hubby is in charge of killing bugs. I am training the 7 year old to do it when Dad isn’t around.
I have the same problems with wasp. I have my husband take care of them
Most years we have wasp problems, but thankfully this year they are sparse. I think it’s the cooler weather. NOT complaining LOL they suck.
I soooo need to do this! we’ve got major wasp and hornet problems. The poor kids can’t even enjoy their kiddie pool some days!
Ugh, hate those bugs! We love Hot Shot!
Wasps always seem to make a nest right where you don’t want them to. And then you’re stuck inside because they’ve taken over your porch. Or that’s what’s happened to me anyway.
They love to nest outside my front door and they love to build under deck railings. I hate those dumb things; I can kill their nests and they start rebuilding within a week!
I love being able to enjoy just about every meal outside in the summer but I don’t care for all the buggers out there. We’ve been somewhat successful with citronella candles but not always.
I have used that for our wasps too and its great cause you can get them FAR away!!
Yes, that’s my favorite part!! I can stand far far away.
Ugh, I can’t stand wasps. Glad you got your deck back! I’ll keep this product in mind next time I find myself in need.
We have hornets so bad right now! We picked up this spray today and got one! Only one more to go! Atleast – that’s all we’ve seen so far!
