When my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, her school held a spelling bee. The kids had small spelling rounds in their classrooms and the top 20 spellers out of the entire grade were invited to the finals. When my husband and I were notified that our daughter was in the finals, we were very proud. We took our children over to the local high school auditorium to cheer our daughter on in the spelling bee and after a long night, our daughter was declared one of the two winners. 🙂
The school hasn’t had another spelling bee since then, but it was enough to spark interest in all three of our children. They love to learn new words and to have us quiz them on how to spell words they may not be very familiar with.
And of course, since that Kindergarten competition, our entire family has had a love for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program.
Join in on the Fun!
The 9th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee finals are going on now, and the championship finals will be broadcasted live on ESPN on Thursday, May 26 from 8p.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune in with your kids and help them get excited about spelling and learning!
This year, the Scripps Spelling Bee is teaming up with Kindle in the shared belief that reading is fundamentally important to a child’s lifelong achievement. Our three children share a Kindle and I love seeing them reading on it so often.
Kindle e-readers are a wonderful tool for readers because of their many built-in features that help expand reading skills and vocabulary, including:
Vocabulary Builder –
The vocabulary builder compiles the words that kids have looked up in the dictionary and saves them in a list for easy access. Readers can then use the list to quiz themselves until they’ve mastered the vocabulary words.
Kindle FreeTime –
With Kindle FreeTime, kids can read books in a fun and safe environment designed specifically for them. Kids can earn achievement badges when they reach reading milestones, and parents can monitor kids’ accomplishments in the progress reports. Parents are updated on the total time spent reading, number of words looked up, badges earned and books read.
Word Wise –
Word Wise automatically shows short and simple definitions above the difficult words to help readers understand and learn the words of more challenging books.
It’s not screen time – it’s book time
No end to reading choices
Kindle offers more than 250,000 children’s titles, plus you can easily borrow e-books from your public library.
More reading, no distractions
Unlike tablets, Kindle is designed just for reading, which means kids can lose themselves in a good book rather than get distracted by videos or games.
Latest generation Kindle
The latest Kindle without sponsored screensavers has a touchscreen display and reads like paper—no annoying glare, even in bright sunlight.
Lighten the Load
Kindle holds thousands of books, so kids will never have to leave their favorite titles behind. And, since a single battery charge lasts weeks, not hours, there’s one less thing for kids to have to remember.
Best-in-class parental controls
Kids won’t access inappropriate content or websites, or accidentally make purchases so parents can have peace of mind.
Drop it? Spill on it? No worries.
The Kindle is covered by a 2-year extended warranty for damage caused by common accidents, including knocking it off a table, dropping it in water, or your dog chewing on it. It also covers your Kindle against electrical and mechanical breakdowns.
Kid-friendly cover
The light, ergonomic cover has textured back which helps smaller hands prevent accidental drops and is precision-molded to fit the Kindle to guard against scratches and mild impact.
