Conversation with A Three-Year-Old
.
Me: If you do not put your shoes on by the time I count to 10, you will get a time out.
Her: (playing) La, la, la, la, la…
Me: One.
Her: (still playing) La, la, la, la, laaaaaa….
Me: Two.
Her: You didn’t say ‘one’.
Me: Yes, I did. Three.
Her: No, you didn’t.
Me: I did. Get your shoes on now. Four!
Her: You did not. So it doesn’t count.
Me: Five!
Her: Mommy, you have to start over.
Me: Six!
Her: You have to say number one first or it doesn’t count.
Me: I’m going to put you in time out. Get the shoes on NOW. Seven!
Her: No. Not until you do it right.
Me: Eight!
Her: You didn’t say one!!!
Me: Nine!
Her: (making very annoyed three-year-old face)
Me: Ten! You didn’t put your shoes on like I asked. Time out, sweetie. I’m sorry.
Her: No. YOU’RE in time out, Mommy. You didn’t count the right way.
She then pushed me toward our time-out spot, saying “I’m sorry ’bout this, Mommy. Very sorry.”
.
Did you laugh? cause if you didn’t then you are a better mom than me, cause I have a VERY hard time not laughing at stuff like this, even when I know I shouldn’t. lol
