I don’t have much of a green thumb. Despite my love for flowers and vegetables, I’ve never been able to keep them alive in my own yard. I’ve tried everything from a simple vegetable garden in the yard to plants in pots, but they never live for very long.
The other day while my kids were playing, I overheard my daughter saying that we couldn’t have a garden because everything always died. I realized that my joking about having a ‘black thumb’ for years was making my children think they couldn’t learn to garden either.
So I decided to change that. Winter is over and it’s the perfect time to get outside and spend quality time with the kids on a fun, educational and easy activity like gardening.
I found some great ways to help my children start their own garden and wanted to share them with you.
Enjoy!
Gardening with Kids
1. Keep it Simple – We started our garden with a few simple herbs and vegetables. Once the kids have practiced gardening for a while, we can decide if we want to make a larger garden. For now, a small area is easier to maintain.
2. Make it Easy – I wanted the kids to be able to see results, so I chose the easiest thing I could find – Miracle-Gro Groables. They are guaranteed to grow, so I know the kids will see results.
3. Let them Decide – We let the kids have input about what we would grow in the garden. I was planning to let them each choose a favorite herb or fruit and then I’d add a couple veggies to the choices, but they surprised me. Each of the kids chose an herb or vegetable that I never would have thought they’d choose. Because they chose their own items, they’re more excited about seeing them grow.
4. Use Their Own – My kids love using their own tools for gardening. We bought them a small set of child-size gardening tools that they are responsible for. They love to get them out of the garage, decide which tools are best for the job they’re doing, and then be responsible for cleaning them and putting them away when we’re finished.
Growing with Miracle-Gro Gro-ables is so easy! Everything we needed to grow our herbs and vegetables was already included. The Gro-ables come in little pods that contain the seeds, plant food, and potting mix all inside. All we had to do to plant them was push the seed pods into loosened potting mix until the top was level with the surface and water. So easy!
We’re watering our garden daily and should have growth within a week or two. The kids are really excited about their new garden and I’m thrilled that everything is literally guaranteed to grow. Instead of passing on my reservations about gardening, I’m helping the children learn to love it and to grow things themselves. The Miracle-Gro Gro-ables really couldn’t have been easier – we love them!

My kids liked to grow small things and help me garden a bit as kids. They liked seeing what they plant, grow. Good tips for gardening with the kids that are so true 🙂

I really like the little seed pods! Teaching kids to garden is especially important for this next generation to respect the environment & replenish the earth.
