Tween Confidence and Hygiene

Despite being a mom of three kids, I’m still not always sure about what I’m doing.

There are days when I feel like I’m really rocking this mom thing. And there are days when I am clearly winging it and nothing is going quite as well.

As my husband and I raise our children, I’m often surprised by some of the things we teach them. Just because I think I’ve explained something clearly, that does not mean it was actually understood. After I’ve repeated myself a few times, sometimes I have to stop and re-explain what I mean in terms that a child would understand.

One example of that is the kids’ hygiene. I thought that it was obvious that everyone should want to be clean from head to toe each and every day. As it turns out, a child doesn’t necessarily see it that way. As long as the child does not smell himself, he might assume he’s clean. If a child is too tired to shower or would rather play than bathe, he may decide to go without cleaning himself. I found myself checking up on my son, reminding him why it was important to shower each morning and again after he gets sweaty.

Now that my son is getting closer to tween years, his hygiene has become more important. Showering used to be enough, but as he gets a little older, he’s needing a bit more.
