With three kids, two cats and sometimes a dogsitting friend or two, my carpets aren’t always as clean as I’d like. It’s not unheard of for me to find a stain on the carpet and have no idea what it is, who left it or how long it’s been there. I’ve tried lots of different cleaners in the past few years. Some worked better than others, some didn’t work well at all, but they all had something in common: they were all liquid cleaners.
Since we have a baby boy who is toddling around, often in bare feet, and kids who are always playing on the carpet, it’s not always convenient to use a liquid carpet cleaner. I worry about the chemicals getting on the kids’ feet before the carpet is dry, worry about even more dirt sticking to the wet carpet and even worry about the animals touching the chemicals before the carpet is dry.
So when I was given the chance to try the new ARM & HAMMER® Dry Carpet Cleaners, I thought it sounded like a great idea.
No more waiting for wet carpets to dry or hiding the wet carpet cleaning areas under boxes so the kids and cats don’t step in wet chemicals. I was curious to see how well it would work, though. It’s a little hard to imagine how a dry powder can clean a carpet stain, so I couldn’t wait to test it out.
I received the 18-ounce shaker and the two-pound pouch of ARM & HAMMER Stubborn Stain Dry Carpet Cleaner. I decided to use it on a stain in our family room. I’m not sure what made the stain, but I’ve vacuumed over it many times and it hasn’t budged. The stain doesn’t show up as well in the photo as it does to the naked eye, but it’s that brownish area in the middle of the carpet. It’s stiff and dried on and has been there for a while.
I sprinkled the ARM & HAMMER Dry Carpet Cleaner powder directly onto the stain. I didn’t add any water or liquid at all, and to be honest, at this point I really didn’t think it would work. ARM & HAMMER recommends misting older stains with a little water, but I didn’t, just to see if it worked at all.
Next, I took a stiff brush and brushed the power down into the stained carpet for about 5-10 seconds.
Then I left the powder on for a little over a half hour. I couldn’t tell if anything had happened and kind of expected that when I vacuumed the powder would be vacuumed up and the stain would still be there.
It was gone! The dried-on crusty brown stain was completely gone. (The colored flecks in the carpet are part of the Berber and supposed to be there.)

I’m really impressed with the ARM & HAMMER Stubborn Stain Dry Carpet Cleaner! I honestly didn’t think a dry powder brushed onto a dry (in this case) stain would actually come up, but it did! It worked just as well, if not better than liquid carpet cleaners I’ve used in the past and was so much easier and faster. It’s definitely the best spot cleaning solution I’ve found for a busy mom like me. No more waiting for a wet cleaner to dry!
