All three of my children love milk. They drink it at breakfast, lunch, and dinner and often ask for a glass of milk in between meals too. Other than having a hard time keeping enough in the fridge, we don’t have to worry about whether or not they’ll be able to have milk as often as they want it.
That’s something we’re very thankful for.
For most kids, summertime means family vacations, picnics at the park, and backyard barbecues. But for more than 22 million children, summertime means they may not be getting the proper nutrition they need when they do not have access to free or reduced price meal programs at school. To be completely honest, that was never something I considered before, so when I had the opportunity to share with my readers about The Great American Milk Drive, I knew I had to get involved.
More than 46 million Americans – including 12 million children – get support from Feeding America® network food banks each year. Fresh milk is actually one of the most requested items – but least donated items at food banks because most people worry about it being perishable, and do not want it to spoil before it gets to a home that needs it. Knowing that fresh milk offers essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, I was delighted to learn that there is, in fact, a way to get fresh milk in to these homes.
The Great American Milk Drive, a collaborative effort between Feeding America, America’s dairy farmers and milk companies, turns online donations into gallons of milk for families in local communities. More than 12 million servings of milk have been provided through this program to date! That is more than 700,000 gallons! That is a whole lot of milk! But much more is needed – and that is where we come in.
For as little as a $5 donation you can help feed a child in your community this summer. By sending a gallon of fresh milk to children who need it most, you are helping to ensure that child gets a good source of high quality protein to help him or her have the potential to play, learn and grow this summer. Without you, these kids may not get to have milk in their diets, which makes it hard for them to get to nutrients they need to grow up strong.
The truth is that the demand for milk is so high, and the donations are so low, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year. You can make a difference for as little as five bucks. Check out The Great American Milk Drive website to donate, and learn other ways you can get involved.
Want to do even more? Share my post with the hashtag #milkdrive via Facebook and Twitter between 6/1/16 – 6/30/16. The Great American Milk Drive will contribute $1 to the Feeding America® network for the purchase of fluid milk, up to a maximum total donation of $5,000.
Many of us take for granted having a gallon of fresh milk sitting in the fridge. Get involved and help kids in need in your community.
