How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes is part of a sponsored campaign. All opinions are my own.
For as long as I can remember, I have been one of those unlucky people that mosquitoes love. I can stand outside in a crowd of friends and family and be the only one getting mosquito bites. For some reason, the little pests love me and find me whenever I’m outside.
Which is a shame, because one of my very favorite places in the entire world is my back-yard.
For many years, I thought mosquitoes were just a not-so-fun part of life in the summertime. I read that mosquitoes are attracted to some people’s scent and that it could be based on diet. But even though I’ve changed my diet and habits many times over the years – from gaining weight with pregnancy to eating only vegetarian meals and losing weight – the mosquitoes loved me just the same.
I remember my mom spraying me down with all kinds of stinky bug sprays to try to ward off those pesky buggers, only to still spend the evening coating down with calamine to try to lessen the itch. Now as a mom I seem to be doing the same thing with my kids – with just about the same results. It doesn’t matter if we’re outside at dusk or talking a walk after lunch, the mosquitoes find us.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe from mosquitoes this summer:
How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes
1. Mosquitoes are most active in summer months, so be sure to take precaution to prevent mosquito bites.
2. When outdoors, protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and by using a mosquito repellent that contains one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or IR3535.
3. Eliminate standing water in your yard where mosquitoes can breed, including any standing water in your gutters, buckets, toys and other containers. Be sure to change the water in your bird baths, fountains, potted plants and any containers that hold standing water at least weekly. Keep pool water treated and circulating.
4. Be sure to eliminate mosquito entry points around your home by closing gaps around the windows and walls, and by sealing around air conditioning window units. Install or repair window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your house.
In addition to protecting ourselves and our home, we also wanted to protect our yard. Instead of staying inside to avoid mosquitoes entirely, we’ve finally tried something new that actually works on making our yard safer from the pests – we’ve been having our yard treated for mosquitoes by Orkin.
Orkin’s mosquito service breaks the life cycle of mosquitoes to help “fight the bite” to keep your family safe. They have their treatment down to a science, and while getting rid of mosquitoes is a process and not just a one-time thing, Orkin can help us be virtually mosquito-free. There is nothing worse than knowing that there is danger lurking in our own backyard. By finding and treating the areas where mosquitoes live and breed, our Orkin Man can help us take back our backyard.
We had our yard treated twice getting ready for what we hope will be a fun, pest-free summer. Our Orkin Man stopped by and treated the yard – we did not even have to be home!
Since Orkin technicians receive more than 160 hours of training in just their first year on the job, I trusted that he knew just exactly how to target treatment to our yard. There was no odor, no color, and no hassle having to wait for him to arrive. And better yet – the mosquitoes seem to be fewer and fewer every day. I cannot tell you how nice it is to sit out back in the afternoons and just relax – without having to smack the skeeters away.
Summer memories should be filled with fun games and Backyard BBQ’s with your friends and family – not stinky sprays and calamine. You can get control of your backyard with the help of your Orkin Man. Check out Orkin’s Mosquito Control Services and schedule your yard treatment today to help make your yard a mosquito-free zone.

Mosquitoes are so annoying and bad in the summer time here in Kentucky
I am also the one in a crowd who the mosquitoes attack.
This is good information, especially as I just read a new mosquito, the Asian tiger, they carry West Nile, Zika and Dengue. Scary.
We get chewed up every year because we live by a pond.
Thank you for all of the great info.
We have mosquitoes when we sit out on our balcony.
When I go for walks with my husband or son, I’m never bothered by mosquitoes – they prefer the guys….I don’t know why, but it’s great for me. I hate bug sprays, too – they smell just awful. I did purchase some that is supposed to be natural for this year and will need it soon.
I live in Minnesota where mosquitoes are the state bird 🙂 It is super important to get rid of standing water!
Mosquito…arggghhh! I actually did not know that Orkin handled mosquitoes.
We have mosquitoes really bad this year, cause we have had a lot of rain.
Living in the south it seems like we can never get rid of these pesky bugs. We ended up getting a bug zapper to help a little
thanks for the tips! I’m definitely a mosquito magnet, so ill keep these in mind.
We have bird baths but we make sure the water is changed regularly.
Thank you for this! We are spending more time outside and my kids are coming in with bites every night. I hate deet but the all natural ones just don’t keep the bugs off.
yes, eliminate standing water, it really doe help keep the mosquito populations down
Thanks for these tips! Mosquitos definitely take over our back yard in the summer time where we can’t even enjoy the outdoors in the early morning and evening times.
I also have that problem where I live! I live in the South and to make a joke about them being as big as airplanes! My Husband sprays our yard, when they start getting bad!
These are great tips. Thanks for sharing
All i knew except #4 about filling gaps around windows. And orkin control would be great if its affordable
We definitely need to get rid of some mosquitoes.
I hate getting bit by mosquitoes. I always get the biggest bumps from it.
We need to get rid of the mosquitos in our back yard. They seem especially bad this year with all of the rain we have gotten.
we have tried so many methods to get rid of the pest, we live near a river, we plant citronella we spray,we light candles, but no nothing works except a mosquito net
Thankfully we don’t get many mosquitoes in my area
Down here in Florida we are in the midst of a rainstorm so i think it will be a while before i evem see mosquitoes
We back up yo 45 acres of open space that has a lot of wetlands in it. We have to get our yard treated as well.
Oh these are all so helpful! I am going to have to try these!
I’ve always been lucky. Mosquitoes don’t like me. Just yesterday I was outside with friends who were complaining about getting bit. I had on short sleeves but didn’t get bit.
This is very helpful information! For whatever reason I am the only one who gets bit by mosquitoes
SOme great tips. We always have a problem with them as we live near a lake
Very helpful and informative post! Thanks!
