When I was a little girl, I loved waking up on Saturday mornings. I would head downstairs to join my siblings, play Nintendo and eat cereal – sometimes straight out of the box! Once I was old enough to join them it was always a race to see who woke up first to get the better game control – and more cereal! I remember tiptoeing down the hallway to be the first one to start playing and then staying quiet enough to not wake anyone else up, to better my chances. It became our Saturday morning ritual that we enjoyed for years.
Once I had children I knew I wanted to pick that Saturday morning ritual up again. So it was almost a rite of passage that first time we piled up on the couch with our favorite Post cereal and Nintendo Switch. While the games have changed a lot over the years, Post cereals – like my favorite Alpha-bits®, with the great taste and alphabet delight that we love – are still just as delicious as I remember them, and spending a Saturday morning with some fun family competition is hard to beat! So every Friday night before I go to bed I set up the kitchen and living room so no matter who wakes up first – the Saturday Morning Gaming Party can begin!
The first thing you want to do is get the room ready. Since I know there will be some inevitable crumbs flying, I always cover the couch or the floor with a sheet for easy clean up. I also make sure all of my nice pillows are out of the line of fire as well. The competition can get pretty fierce!
Next, I set out everything we need for breakfast on the counter or a tray table. We include our favorite Post cereals, fresh fruit, and anything else we might want. I go ahead and set out bowls and spoons so that we do not have to worry about slamming drawers and cabinets and waking anyone up. I even go ahead and pre-pour a couple glasses of milk and put them in the refrigerator so they can be easily grabbed, and I do not have to worry too much about spills taking up our precious gaming time.
Finally, I make sure the game console is charged and ready to go! The kids love to play along with each other, challenge each other, and cheer each other on. It has been wonderful to see them enjoying their cereal and games in the morning just the way I used to.
