Before we had children, my husband and I used to love camping. We are lucky enough to live only 2 hours from the beach and 3 hours from the mountains. Whenever we felt like it, we could grab our tent and some supplies and be on our way to a great weekend outdoors.
We’ve tried it a couple of times with the kids, but they’re still a little too young to really appreciate it. We’ll try it again once they’re a little bit older, but until then, we’ll share a lot of the fun aspects without actually camping outdoors.
My younger daughter got a little princess tent for her birthday and the girls love to “camp out” in it. We’ll let them have a picnic basket with special foods and lots of cozy blankets and pillows to sleep on. They talk and giggle and stay up much too late.
Our favorite part of “camping” though, is making S’mores. I have such wonderful memories of sitting around a campfire with a whittled-down stick, toasting the perfect marshmallow to add to my s’more. I love being able to share activities like that with my kids and help them create their own happy childhood memories. Whenever we’re able to, we roast marshmallows over the fire just like I did when I was young.
When the weather isn’t cooperating though, like today, we make our S’mores from Hershey’s chocolate bars, marshmallow fluff and graham crackers. There’s just nothing else in the world like an ooey, gooey, chocolatey, messy S’mores when you’re a kid (or kid at heart)!
Have any fun S’mores recipes of your own? Feel free to share in the comments!
